Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds United

Mid-Table Sheffield Wednesday look to bounce back from two straight defeats as they play host to Yorkshire rivals Leeds United, who themselves have hit a bad patch of form in recent weeks.

Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have finished in the top six for the past two seasons but are currently sitting in mid-table in the Championship table having lost two of their last three.

A seven-match unbeaten run was ended by local rivals Sheffield United last weekend, and that was followed by a 1-0 defeat at struggling Birmingham in midweek.

They will be determined to bounce back with a positive result here, although they face a tough challenge against an extremely good Leeds United team.

Recent League Form – LLDWWD

Leeds United

Leeds made a brilliant start to their league campaign this season, winning five of an unbeaten opening seven matches and keeping six clean sheets.

However, they have lost two of their last three in the league with both of those losses coming away from home.

Defeat at Cardiff City in midweek saw them drop off the top spot and they know they cannot afford any more slip-ups if they want to keep up pressure on those teams above them.

Recent League Form – LWLWWW

Team News

Sheffield Wednesday are still without last season’s top scorer Fernando Forestieri, who is out until at least December following knee surgery.

Goalkeeper Keiren Westwood is struggling to regain fitness in time for this fixture so 21-year-old Joe Wildsmith may continue between the sticks.

Leeds United are almost at full-strength, although captain Liam Cooper will miss the trip to Sheffield following his sending off for a second bookable offence at Cardiff in midweek.

Head to Head

This meeting will be the 70th between these sides, with Leeds having the better head to head record with 32 victories. Sheffield Wednesday have beaten their Yorkshire rivals twenty times, while there have also been seventeen draws.

Leeds won both league meetings last season, winning 2-0 away in August 2016 and 1-0 at home in February this year.

Sheffield Wednesday have only won one of the last six meetings, with three Leeds victories and two draws during that time.

Betting Odds and Predictions

Sheffield Wednesday are the slight betting favourites for the victory here, probably due to home advantage and Leeds struggling on their travels in recent weeks.

The home side are priced at 5/4 with Sky Bet, who have the visitors priced at 9/4 and the draw at 23/10. Find here a Sky Bet review.

Having studied all available statistics, we are edging towards Leeds to win this match. They may have lost their last two away games, but they won three on the road in the league before that. They are one of the top scorers in the division, as well as having a solid defence which has kept clean sheets in 60% of league matches this term.

Sheffield Wednesday have managed to keep just one clean sheet so far and will be lacking confidence after losing twice, to their Steel City rivals and a relegation-threatened side, in the past week.

So, the 9/4 for an away victory is an extremely tempting price and one which provides plenty of profit potential.

As a bit of insurance though, we would recommend those punters with any doubt to back the visitors in the Double Chance market. Leeds or Draw is priced at 8/13, which is still pretty decent odds.

There have been over 1.5 goals scored in 100% of Sheffield Wednesday’s home matches this season, and 80% of Leeds’ away games. Therefore, the 4/11 for Over 1.5 Goals here looks to be an almost certain way of gaining a small profit.

Over 2.5 Goals is priced at 11/10, and may be worth a punt. 60% of Wednesday’s home matches, and 40% of Leeds’ away games, have seen at least three goals scored.

With us believing Leeds will win and that there will be a few goals scored, the 9/2 on Leeds and Over 2.5 Goals is a price we cannot ignore.

As for who will score the goals. Kemar Roofe has netted in two of Leeds’ last three away games and is priced at 9/4 to score anytime here, whilst Gary Hooper is priced at 15/8 in the same market and has netted in five of Sheffield Wednesday’s last six matches.

Top Betting Tip

Our top betting tip for this match is Leeds or Draw in the Double Chance market, at odds of 8/13 with Sky Bet.

Premier League – Watford vs Liverpool

The second game of the new Premier League season sees Watford entertain Liverpool at Vicarage Road on Saturday morning. Both sets of fans will be excited heading into the new season, but both have vastly different ambitions. Watford fans will be hoping that the club can consolidate their position in the league and avoid another relegation battle, whilst Liverpool fans will have their sights set considerably higher. The Anfield club return to the Champions League this season and will also have their eye on a Premier League title challenge, so a fast start is essential for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Watford made the move to change their manager again this summer, with Marco Silva coming in to replace Walter Mazzari. The Hornets have found success in changing their manager every season, but in Silva, they may have now found a coach for the longer term. Silva has been busy in the transfer market bringing in Tom Cleverley, Will Hughes, Nathaniel Chalobah, Kiko Femenia and Richarlison amongst others for a combined total spend of £36m. Fans will be excited at the prospect of seeing all these new players and it will be interesting to see how many of them Silva gives debuts to on Saturday. One established name who will miss the game though is Troy Deeney, who is nursing an injury ahead of the season opener. The striker has only missed one of the last 76 Premier League games for the club.

It has been a slightly frustrating summer for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp so far. The club managed to get deals for Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke over the line early but have spent most of the summer seeing deals for Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita scuppered. With Barcelona now expected to push through a deal for star man Phillipe Coutinho in the coming week and injuries to first teamers Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne and Daniel Sturridge, what started out as a very bright summer has been soured in recent weeks. Liverpool still have a very strong team though and Mohamed Salah looks to have settled very well in pre-season, but if Coutinho leaves and Lallana is injured until November, then the club will have to move for another attacking minded midfielder.

Talking Points

  1. Will Coutinho play? The Brazilian maestro has been linked with a big money move to Barcelona to replace Neymar, but will he start the season for Liverpool?
  2. Liverpool have won each of the last three Premier League meetings between these two clubs by an aggregate score of 9-1.
  3. Watford are yet to win on the opening day of the Premier League; drawing twice and losing twice.

Liverpool have been extremely impressive in pre-season, especially going forward and I would expect them to have too much attacking talent at their disposal here, even without Adam Lallana. It remains to be seen whether Phillipe Coutinho will play, but even if he doesn’t, I would still expect Liverpool to wrap up a comfortable victory here on Saturday morning.

Betting Tips (Bet365)

Liverpool are favourites to pick up an away win here with odds of 8/15, whilst Watford are 5/1 to secure an unlikely victory. Liverpool have regularly scored heavily against Watford and they are available with a -2 handicap for 7/2 (Odds from Sportwetten24.com) if you fancy them to win by at least 3 goals on Saturday. Everyone is expecting goals this weekend, but Liverpool are never too solid at the back, so -2 might be too much of a stretch for the Anfield club, the 7/5 on them to win with a -1 handicap looks like a safer bet.

My pick – Liverpool (-1) – 7/5

Tennis Betting Tips: ATP Cincinnati Masters Final – 20/8/17

Grigor Dimitrov vs Nick Kyrgios

Two of the most exciting players on the ATP tour meet in what promises to be a highly entertaining final in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Number 7 seed Dimitrov, has shown resilience all week to progress through to the final. He defeated John Isner in 2 tight tie-breaks sets in his semi-final as well as dispatching the dangerous Juan Martin Del Potro earlier in the week. Remarkably, this is Dimitrov’s maiden Masters 1000 final and he will be hoping to continue this form into next week’s US Open.

Kyrgios’s recent form has been nothing short of extraordinary. Prior to Cincinnati, Kyrgios had withdrawn from 3 of his last 4 events and question marks were being raised about his motivation to compete at the top of the men’s game. This week however, he’s silenced the doubters with a remarkable run. He’s beaten David Goffin, David Ferrer and Rafael Nadal to reach the final here and will be desperate to claim the crown.

Head to Head

This is only the 2nd meeting between these 2 rising stars – with Dimitrov leading the head to head 1:0.

Odds and Predictions

Kyrgios’s run this week sees him installed as the favourite for this one at 8/13 with Paddy Power whilst Dimitov will certainly fancy his chances at 7/5 with Marathon Bet. Both of these men came won their semi-finals in 2 tie-break sets and this match is 8/13 with Coral to contain a tie-break. Like the best betting sites for 2017.

Top Betting Tip

This should be a close match, especially with so much at stake. Backing the match to go to three sets is 11/10 with William Hill.

Simona Halep vs Garbine Muguruza

Two of the biggest names in women’s tennis meet in what promises to be a thrilling final in Ohio as Wimbledon champ Garbine Muguruza takes on world number 2 Simona Halep.

Muguruza, has been in sparkling form of late and she looks full of confidence in every game she plays at the moment. Her run to the final here in Cincy has included wins over current world number 1 Karolina Pliskova as well as the dangerous Svetlana Kuznetsova and home favourite Madison Keys.

Halep, has been equally as impressive this week with victories over Johanna Konta and the in-form Sloane Stephens. The Romanian can reach the world number 1 ranking with a win here (replacing Pliskova) so there’s plenty to play for.

Head to Head

This will be the 4th meeting between these 2 heavyweights of the women’s game with the Spaniard Muguruza leading the head to head 2:1. Remarkably this will be their first meeting for 2 years so previous records should hold little weight here.

Odds and Predictions

The bookmakers can’t seem to call this one with both players priced at 10/11 with Bet 365. Understandably, this one should be close so backing the match to go to 3 sets could be a good punt with the title on the line – available at 13/10 with William Hill.

Top Betting Tip

Halep should have a little more to play for here with the world number 1 ranking at stake and that could be the extra bit of motivation she needs – backing her to win by 2 sets to 1 looks a good move at 3/1 with Bet Victor.

Match Double Bet

Backing both Simona Halep & Grigor Dimitrov to win their matches by 2 sets to 1 as a double – pays a very healthy 20/1 with Bet365. Find here our Bet365 review 2017.

Top Flight Action Returns in England

The 2017/18 Premier League season does not begin for another week but the first trophy of the English football season will be decided this Sunday.  Arsenal meet Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Arsenal qualified for this match thanks to defeating Chelsea in the FA Cup final last season.  It was a good end to the season for the Gunners, who had struggled since being eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich.

Chelsea earned the right to contest the Community Shield by winning the Premier League last season.  The Blues will be hoping a win in this game is the start of a successful title defence.

Arsenal Form

Arsenal began their preseason in Australia with a 2-0 win over Sydney and 3-1 win against Western Sydney.  They have also defeated Benfica and picked up a draw with Bayern Munich.

However, there was a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in a friendly match towards the end of July and a 2-1 loss at home to Sevilla in the Emirates Cup last weekend.

Most of the talk in the summer has been around the possible departures of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.  Both players have been linked with moves away from the Gunners but they have managed to keep hold of both players, for now.

Arsene Wenger has not been afraid to splash the cash in the transfer market, adding Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon and left-back Sead Kolasinac.

Chelsea Form

Chelsea have had a quiet build up to the new season with their three main matches starting with the 3-0 victory over Arsenal.  Since then they have lost 3-2 to Bayern Munich and 2-1 to Inter Milan.

Most of the action for Chelsea has come off the pitch, with Antonio Conte attempting to bring players in while also sorting out the future of Diego Costa.  The Spanish international seems set to leave Stamford Bridge but has not completed a transfer.

Conte has brought in defender Antonio Rudiger, midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and striker Alvaro Morata.  These three players are set to replace John Terry, Nemanja Matic and Diego Costa respectively this season.

Team News

Arsenal are set to continue their development of playing three at the back in this match.  However, with Gabriel Paulista injured Shkodran Mustafi a doubt, Laurent Koscielny could be joined by Rob Holding and Nacho Monreal.  Alexis Sanchez is unlikely to start which could mean a place in the team for Danny Welbeck.

Chelsea are without Tiemoue Bakayoko and Eden Hazard who are injured.  Both Alvaro Morata and Pedro are doubtful which should mean a place up-front for Michy Batshuayi.

Top Betting Tips

Arsenal have the superior record in the Community Shield and have the recent memory of defeating Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley.  This makes Arsenal a decent bet at 12/5 with Bet365 to win the match.

Without Eden Hazard and Diego Costa, Chelsea are missing two of their key attacking players from last season.  It will be interesting to see how they cope with their loss in this game and whether they can create the same number of chances in their absence.  Arsenal to win the match to nil is 5/1 at Ladbrokes.

Alexandre Lacazette is the man on the edge of every Arsenal fans lips now.  The Frenchman would love nothing more than to score and introduce himself to Premier League fans.  Lacazette is 11/2 with Ladbrokes to score the first goal.
